The teaching of Phonics at Orston Primary School

Phonics Teaching at Orston Primary School
At Orston we follow the Letters and Sounds guidance issued by the Department for Education.  This is a scheme that is taught in phases, Phase 1 to Phase 6. Children begin Letters and Sounds when they come into our 4+ Group at Phase 1 and as they enter FS2 they begin Phase 2. Generally, Phases 2, 3 and 4 are taught in FS2, Phase 5 in Year 1 and Phase 6 in Year 2. This ensures that we are covering all the sounds and blends in the correct order.

The children are taught daily in phonics groups in the Phase they are assessed to be in and in each session the children have the opportunity to revisit previously taught phonemes/ graphemes etc, are taught a new one and then apply their knowledge.
To support our teaching and the children’s learning of Phonics we may use resources from:

  • Phonics Play
  • Jolly Phonics
  • Twinkl
  • Oxford Reading Tree
Throughout the day the children will be using their phonics knowledge in their reading and writing activities.
